CORNER BROOK The candidates running for municipal office in Corner Brook will have an opportunity to get their messages out there during a public forum being planned a week before the Set. 24 voting.
The candidates forum is being organized by the Grenfell Campus Student Union and the Western Environment Centre and will be held over two nights to accommodate the number of candidates in the running.
The dates for the forum will be Sept. 17 and Sept. 18 and candidates will be randomly split between both nights based on their availability. Both events will take place in the atrium of the new extension to the Arts and Sciences building at Grenfell Campus, Memorial University.
The format of the evening will be a short introduction of each candidate, followed by a series of questions from a variety of sectors, ranging from economy to education, art to environment.
An informal meet and greet will follow the formal part of the evening.
âCandidates will not debate with each other,â Matt Brockel from the Grenfell Campus Student Union said in a press release announcing the forum. âThe evening is about providing information to the voters rather than about debating.â
Questions will be polled from the community through sign-up sheets located in local coffee shops, direct contact with local organizations as well as questions submitted by residents via phone or email. Questions will be chosen based on their topic to ensure that a variety of issues are covered.
âWe are trying to have a good cross-section of issues,â said Simon Jansen from the Western Environment Centre. âPeople want to know what the candidates are for and against and their vision for the future of Corner Brook.â
