Eight organizations will vie for the Employer of Distinction honour this year.
The award, given by the Newfoundland and Labrador Employers' Council, will be handed out during a luncheon at Delta Hotel & Conference Centre Feb. 25.
It recognizes employers that excel at leadership, innovation, creativity, and a fundamental belief in the value of a healthy, safe, and motivated workforce.
Nominees for the 2009 awards - given in both large and small employer categories- include Bennett Restaurants, D.F. Barnes, Newfoundland and Labrador Liquor Corporation, Noble Drilling (Canada) Ltd., Shepell fgi, St. Jude Hotel, Teck Duck Pond Operations, and Victorian Order of Nurses St. John's Branch (VON).
Last year's recipients were C-Core and Browning Harvey.
The employers' council says they were recognized as "organizations that place value on their employees, give back to the community, and set new standards for excellence in the employment relationship."
This year's awards luncheon will highlight how the winning companies have excelled in these areas in 2009.
The luncheon will also include a keynote address by Tanny Collins, president of PF Collins, a past Employer of Distinction winner.
This year's judging panel is comprised of Dr. Wilfred Zerbe, dean of MUN's faculty of business, Heather Modlin, director of Key Assets Newfoundland and Labrador, and Vince Withers, retired businessman and founding chairperson of the employers' council.
Anyone interested in attending the luncheon can register online at www.nlec.nf.ca.

I think the Liquor Store should get the award. I'm there every day and there are always 10 or 12 employees stood up that never seem too busy to say hello and have a chat.
When they installed that wine sample station I thought I had died and gone to heaven. I've spent afternoons there using different sample cards. Next, they needs a big screen tv!

And the NL liquor was nominated?? What gives. I have a couple close friends that have worked with them for years that would argue. Sure they pay great, but if they didnt they wouldnt keep people. It appears they have trouble keeping people with the $15 + they pay starting out. I stopped into the CBS store this last friday with the snow storm and was surprised this store decided to stay open even though the stores in town had closed. Guess the all mighty dollar is more important than the employees that had to drive far distances in the bad weather. To give them credit sobeys was still open. My take is if you like working casual with no job stability for 5+ years before the make you permanent and like having very little days off, no family time etc. the NLC sounds great. -
