Nfld Horticultural Society

     The monthly meeting of the Nfld Horticultural Society will be held at St David's Church Hall, Elizabeth Avenue at 8 p.m. on October 1.  Lorna Hogan of Murray's Garden Center will give a presentation on house plants. Our fall plant sale will take place as well and now is a great time to put perennials into your garden. Refreshments and friendly garden chat following the meeting.

Ocean Week Author Reading with Jim Wellman

  • Details : The City of St. John's and the A.C. Hunter Library present an Author Reading with well known Newfoundland author Jim Wellman as he presents his book Sea Folk. Jim Wellman was born in Twillingate and raised in the small fishing and logging community of Port Anson, Jim practically learned to walk on the deck of his dad’s fishing schooner. Jim never strayed far from his marine roots even when he pursued a broadcasting career. He was host of Fisheries Broadcast for the last fifteen years of his thirty year career with CBC Radio in Newfoundland and Labrador. After an early retirement from the CBC in 1997, Jim traded a microphone for a pen and became a contributing editor with the Navigator, an Atlantic-wide fisheries magazine based in St. John’s. He has been managing editor of that publication since 2002. Jim has also written seven books - all marine related. Jim has also freelanced with numerous Atlantic Canadian magazines including, Progress, Business Week, Downhome and Business Post. He also did contract work for Marine Atlantic, Marine Protected Areas Association (Heritage Canada) and the Canadian Sealers Association. Register by phone at (709) 737-3950.
