The Consumers’ Health Awareness Network of Newfoundland and Labrador (CHANNAL) is participating in the national Defeat Depression campaign by hosting a community walk on Sunday, June 15, 2014, starting at 1:30 pm, at the St. John’s Lions Club. Depression impacts virtually every Canadian family. It is estimated that 1 in 5 people will suffer a mental illness in their lifetimes. Unfortunately, mental illness is often filled with stigma, guilt and shame. “We want to change that by sharing our stories, enjoying some physical exercise and coming together as a community” says Jill Ralph, Event Organizer. CHANNAL is the only consumer-led mental health organization in the province. We are a provincial non-profit organization that exists to build and strengthen a self-help network among individuals who live with mental health issues. Everyone is invited to participate! The site opens at 1:30 pm and each person who registers will receive a ticket for a chance to win a prize after the walk. Join us as we walk through St. John’s with the goal of raising awareness for mental health and $3,000 in support of CHANNAL’s local programs. You can help! Register and donate online at the St. John’s Walk to Defeat Depression website. Donations of $25 or more are eligible for a tax receipt.
