The Avalon Dragons’ fourth annual SunSplash Paddle in Paradise

    Paddle In Paradise on Saturday, August 16, on Octagon Pond. The Avalon Dragons’ fourth annual SunSplash Paddle in Paradise, an exciting day of dragon boat racing, will take place Saturday August 16, at Octagon Pond in Paradise.  Thirty community and corporate teams will compete for “Fastest Team,” “Most Pledges,” and “Most Spirited.”  The public is invited and there will be activities for kids, food, and music, as well as racing excitement. Opening ceremonies at 8 a.m.  Races from 8:45 a.m. to the Championship race at 3:40 p.m. There will be a break from 12:05 to 12:30 p.m. for the very moving flower ceremony, to remember those who have not survived breast cancer and to give hope to those still struggling. If weather causes a cancellation, the festival will take place on Sunday. Friday night, August 15, at Octagon Pond, the public is invited to an official opening, starting at 7 p.m. The Avalon Dragons will be introduced, followed by entertainment by 709, Blue Eyed Blonde and, at 10 pm, Shanneyganock.  In case of bad weather, the event will take place at the Rotary Paradise Youth and Community Centre, 68 McNamara Drive. Experience the ancient art of pit firing and buy beautiful ceramics straight out of the fire. One-of-a-kind ceramic tableware, sculptures, vessels and more from $2 to $200. Support a community fundraiser. This all-day, all-ages, free event is not to be missed. The fire is lit around 10 a.m. and the first pieces are ready for purchase at approximately 1 p.m. Rain date August 17.
