  • Details : For the first-time ever, there will be a walk to support brain tumour patients and survivors in St.John's. This walk aims to raise funds for patient programs and research into this disease that an estimated 55,000 Canadians are living with. Funds go to Brain Tumour Foundation of Canada, the only national organization dedicated to serving brain tumour patients and their families.

    “By the Glow of the Kerosene Lamps”, a tribute our female ancestors, takes place at Cochrane Street United on September 27.  Doors open at 7 p.m. show starts at 7:30 p.m. The show features local dancers and singers, traditional Newfoundland and Labrador music and a reading by Trudy Morgan-Cole from “A Sudden Sun”. Proceeds go to Project Grace and the Native Friendship Centre. A tea and silent auction will follow the show.   • Details : To ‘grow’ upon the success of last year’s inaugural event, Memorial’s Botanical Garden, and its dedicated partners, have reassembled to offer the public the exciting opportunity to participate in the 2nd Annual Food ‘n Garden Fair! Featuring new chefs and returning favorites, this year is set to be bigger-and-better! Guests at the Garden can expect: • multiple demonstrations, displays and tips on: gardening; growing vegetables, herbs and composting; • a Potato Tasting booth, • kids’ component including contest winners, vegetable creature creations, balloon animals, newspaper planters and various other activities; • a unique food tasting experience where local chefs will tempt your taste buds with their culinary creations using ingredients provided by our local farmers, and; • the annual Potato Peeling Contest – for kids and adults! In addition to recognizing 2014 as the “International Year of the Family Farm,” the Food ‘n Garden Fair will continue to honour Ken Proudfoot’s legacy as a research scientist, potato breeder, avid gardener and a Friends of the Garden member.   • Details : CBC Newfoundland & Labrador invites the public to think about literacy through CBC READS WITH ONE BOOK, ONE CHILD to be held at Avalon Mall in St. John’s on Saturday, Sept. 27, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. CBC is partnering with Literacy NL, Community Food Sharing Association and Avalon Mall in this community initiative to help facilitate a conversation about literacy in this province. CBC personalities will be there to read their favourite children’s books to families and mall patrons. Visitors to the event are encouraged to bring new and gently used children’s books to donate to Literacy NL and the Community Food Sharing Association. All books donated will be given to local food banks and distributed to families and children who are without or have limited resources to books and reading. Bring the kids to meet Kids’ CBC characters Bookaboo, Huckle Cat and Bo on the Go and to have fun in the CBC Craftivity Zone. Literacy NL will be present at the event to provide information on literacy in Newfoundland & Labrador.
