The Music Industry Association of Newfoundland and Labrador (MusicNL) is pushing to perk international ears for provincial performers this weekend.

Throughout today and Saturday the industry association servicing musicians, managers and producers of all kinds, among others, will host its annual conference and awards gala, packing in events aimed at bumping up airplay and distribution for provincial artists.

The usual panel discussions are scheduled to be held on topics such as "Making a living from songwriting," the "Music business A-Z" and the ever-important "Where to find the money!"

However, this year will include a delegation from Ireland of 12 reviewers, radio DJs, label representatives, producers and other industry-related personnel who have been shipped in to consume the weekend's events.

"This is part of the plan we've been dealing with for years now," said MusicNL Executive Director Denis Parker. "It's a plan to assist and promote our people internationally."

Central to the weekend will be the "Export Ready Showcase" at Mickey Quinn's, beginning 7:30 p.m. Saturday night and moving through to 2 a.m. on Sunday.

The showcase will feature 10 of the best musicians and groups from around the province, including: Allan Ricketts, Sherry Ryan, Jerry Stamp, Duane Andrews, Hey Rosetta!, The Navigators, Mercy the Sexton, Sherman Downey, Dr. Zoo and The Subtitles.

The event is only open to conference delegates and is targeted to international guests.

For the public, the CBC has sponsored two songwriter's circle events that will be held at the Delta Hotel ballroom Sunday, prior to the evening awards gala.

The first songwriter's circle will feature creations and conversations with Colleen Power, Mike MacDonald, Kalem Mahoney and Gary French. The second will feature Terry Penney, Jerry Stamp, Karla Pilgrim and Sherman Downey.

Tickets for Sunday's Music-NL/CBC songwriter circles are available through the MusicNL office (754-2574) or at the conference registration desk at the Delta Hotel lobby this afternoon starting at 3 p.m.

The awards gala is Sunday at the St. John's Arts and Culture Centre hosted by Phil Churchill.

It begins at 8 p.m. and includes performances by Shanneyganock, Chris Kirby, Terry Penney, The Once, Karla Pilgrim, Dr. Zoo, Kujo, The Monday Nights, Stone Rogues and Mike MacDonald.

Tickets for the awards gala are available through the St. John's Arts and Culture Centre box office.
