Detroit Red Wings' forward Dan Cleary suffered a separated shoulder in Wednesday's 1-0 loss to the St. Louis Blues and is expected to be lost to the team until sometime in January.

"Probably be out four weeks," Red Wings' head coach Mike Babcock told the Detroit Free Press Thursday.

Cleary was hurt when clobbered by Blues' defenceman Barret Jackman in the neutral zone with about five minutes left in Wednesday's game.

Cleary is tied with Tomas Holmstrom for third in team scoring with 16 points. The Riverhead, Harbour Grace native, who has seven goals and nine assists in 30 games, had also been at the summer orientation camp for Canada's 2010 Olympic team.

Cleary had 40-plus points the previous three seasons for the Red Wings.

Detroit's rebuilding season has been more difficult than expected.

The franchise could not keep some of its key players such as Marian Hossa because of the salary cap. Then, the Red Wings lost Johan Franzen, Valtteri Filppula, Jason Williams and defenceman Niklas Kronwall to injuries.

Detroit has won only four of its last 12 games to fall to 14-11-5 and ninth place overall in the Western Conference, heading into a game tonight against the Anaheim Ducks. The top eight teams make the playoffs.
