The Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA) and the Bonavista Historic Townscape Foundation have announced funding for renovations of one of the oldest theatres in Newfoundland and Labrador.
Bonavista's Garrick Theatre will be turned into a multi-purpose facility with cinema supplementing live performances. The theatre will offer Newfoundland, Canadian and international films, with an emphasis on independent film. The facility will now have a permanent, part-time staff.
ACOA is providing $700,000 for the renovations, while the foundation is providing $210,000.
"This project will help develop the heritage resources of Bonavista and create new economic opportunities for the town and region," said Fisheries Minister Loyola Hearn, who made the announcement on behalf of ACOA Minister Peter MacKay.
The Garrick Theatre first opened on Christmas Day, 1945.
