With the East Coast Music Awards now over, the Juno Awards can again become the focus for regional artists and industry representatives. In terms of Juno nominations, Atlantic Canadians do not hold the bulk. Even so, there is regional representation.
One musician in particular was given some Junos momentum, being acknowledged multiple times at the ECMAs gala Sunday.
For work on the album "Three," Nova Scotia's Joel Plaskett was presented with six artist ECMAs for Entertainer of the Year, Male Solo Recording of the Year, FACTOR Recording of the Year, Group Single of the Year, SOCAN Songwriter of the Year, and Pop Recording of the Year. He also picked up an industry award for Producer of the Year.
The award wins may or may not help Plaskett's Junos chances, but the musician said he personally does not believe in evaluating things that way.
"I'm a big believer in just working hard," said Plaskett, who talked about just keeping his head down and focusing on the task at hand when it comes to his work.
In fact, Plaskett said he will be keeping his ECMA statuettes at home, but in a writing room, away from the eyes of everyone who drops by, being "not one to display" prizes.
Plaskett holds a Juno Award nominations for Songwriter of the Year for a trio of songs from "Three."
He is joined in the category by Carly Rae Jepson and Ryan Stewart; Emily Haines and James Shaw; K'Naan and Michael BublÉ.
Plaskett is also nominated for a second Juno for Adult Alternative Album of the Year. His competition in that category will come from 1977, Amy Millan, Cuff the Duke and Howie Beck.
In contrast to Plaskett, Amelia Curran did not take home any of the four ECMAs for which she was nominated. Curran holds a Juno nomination for Roots and Traditional Album of the Year: Solo.
Then again, neither did ECMA buzz duo Madison Violet, who are nominated for a Juno award for Roots and Traditional Album of the Year: Group.
Artists lining up Juno week gigs
Aside from ECMA results for Juno nominees, the weekend provided the opportunity to check in with Newfoundland and Labrador artists on their Juno week scheduling.
For official Juno week shows for Ruckus On the Edge, performers have already been announced with ECMA-nominated artists among the bunch.
For example, ECMA award winners The Novaks will perform as part of the rock night event April 15, along with Hey Rosetta! and The Idlers.
Any local artists for the main gala have yet to be announced, however there are plenty of other opportunities for musicians to connect with audiences and industry players - just ask them.
Chris Kirby confirmed he and his band will play a show April 16 at what might be labelled their home stage - The Fat Cat. The details of that show, regarding tickets and times, are still being worked out, Kirby said.
As for the rest of Juno week? "We'll be buzzing around for sure," he answered.
The Baytown Connection, who showcased during the ECMAs, applied for various Juno week events outside of the main Ruckus on the Edge shows.
"We'll know at the end of the week if we get a showcase or not," said band member James Wright.
Applications for "official" Juno week events had to be in early in the fall, according to members of Roundelay. For them, it was bad timing.
"One of the events, you had to have your application in October. At that point we had just lost the drummer we had previously. We're still going to try to get shows during, but we're not unfortunately involved in JunoFest," said band member Brad Nichols.
Still, the band is looking to get in on some of the unofficial events and alternative showcases being set-up by bar owners and the Music Industry Association of New-foundland and Labrador.
The MusicNL shows are being played at the Rock House, according to executive director Denis Parker. The events are entirely separate from the Ruckus on the Edge offerings, only adding to the musical offerings for visitors and locals alike.
"Exposure wise, people from all around Canada, around the world, will be there, so more people will see you," said Roundelay's Joe Tucker.
There's also a flip side.
"At the same time, because everybody's playing, there's more white noise," said bandmate Mike Lahey.
While a point for debate, potential "white noise" is not dissuading artists from trying to get in on the ongoing flurry of arrangements for events - official or not.
Matthew Hornell has been working along with The Diamond Mines to arrange gigs.
"I'll be there," Hornell jumped in, even before the question of attending Juno week was out.
"We're waiting to hear back on the showcases. We've been in talks with (organizers) and they're very interested," he said.
He added that the Juno week education program will also likely be in his future.
"It looks like we're going to do that. Go in to the school, do a workshop and share music there," said Hornell.
As with the list of nominees, schedules for Juno week events will be made available by The Telegram as they are finalized.
