Three Toronto-area men were arrested Monday at St. John’s International Airport after police seized 178 pounds of Cathinone.

According to the RCMP, Cathinone or “Khat” has been termed a natural amphetamine which produces sympathomimetic and central nervous system stimulation analogous to the effects of amphetamine.

The arrest was made about 4:30 p.m. Thursday by members of the RCMP St. John's Drug Section, with assistance of Canada Border Services Agency. The three men were traveling on an international flight from London to Toronto.

They are facing charges of importing a Schedule III substance contrary to the Controlled Drug and Substances Act.

All three are set to appear in provincial court in St. John’s this morning.

Khat is a great alternative to amphetamines. What the police just did was instead of let khat into the hands of people, let methamphetamine and all the rest of the terrible chemical amphetamines into their hands. So... did they really do a good job? Actually, you'd all be safer in Newfoundland if they let the drugs through, because now some big drug cartel is furious about this, and will likely come to St. John's seeking out what the problem was, bringing guns and more people into the city to deal with the drug shipments. Awesome!! keep up the fabulous work ladies!!

CAN'T THE RCMP FIND ANY REAL DRUGS? This stuff is legal for sale in MANY countries including Israel and half of Africa. It's an herb that up until not all that long ago was legal here too. This isn't keep drugs away from our kids. When I start seeing drug busts for oxy, meth or Coke then things will be getting safer. Until then, the RCMP are just busting jackasses for small amounts of herbs and weed. It's a joke and they are pathetic. Both the RCMP and RNC are fat cats without much education who get a silver lined pension. Given the current economic state of the country, we should be slashing their pay and benefits.
