With his fresh face and endearing demeanor, Craig Sharpe won over many a heart during his stint on CTV's Canadian Idol. And in placing second, in the closest race in show history, he won himself a place in the Canadian music scene.

Today, just over six months since he was eliminated from the show, Sharpe releases his debut CD, "I Am."

The first single off the disc, "When They Know Your Name," is already in heavy rotation on local radio and it's much-requested status bodes well for the success of the album.

Despite his young age, Sharpe handles his brush with fame extremely well

"It's like I was born to do this," he says. "I've always been ready. It's like I've already done all this, it comes so naturally. ... I'm doing something that I've wanted to do since I was a child."

Practical outlook

And while he hopes for success, Sharpe has a pragmatic outlook that also belies his years.

"The CD, it could take off or blow up. I don't know what's going to happen. It could be here today, gone tomorrow. That's the way this business works."

If success does come. however, Sharpe knows exactly to whom the credit goes.

"If it does take off, I'm hopefully going to do a Canadian tour and go and say thank you to everyone who bought a CD. ... Without the fans, you're nowhere."

During the making of the album, the 17-year-old from Upper Island Cove in C.B.N. has spent much time away from home, mostly in Toronto. And while he knows that is as it must be, he feels a little homesick from time to time.

"To be honest, I really don't like being away from home. I'm 17 and I just got my licence and I wish I could be home driving around. It's also hard for my family, but they know why I'm away and what I'm doing, and that's what makes me feel OK about it - that I'm accomplishing so much."

The disc has a wide-ranging sound - intentionally so, Sharpe says. He wants to showcase his versatility. He's also taken the step of including a few tunes that will be quite familiar to Newfoundlanders - Ron Hynes' "Sonny's Dream" and "No Change in Me," plus the classic "Danny Boy."

Why?

"I wanted to put something on it that, no matter what age you are, 10 or 60, there's something on here that will appeal to all. Newfoundland songs are so important to me. Just listening to those songs, it feels like I'm home. It doesn't matter where I am."

Hands-on songwriting

Sharpe co-wrote four of the tracks, and wrote one, "Missing You," on his own. He's also been teaching himself to play piano.

"I'm trying to learn by ear. I'm a really self-reliant person, especially when it comes to music. So, I want to be able to listen to something, and play it."

"I Am" is on the Moca Music label, distributed through EMI Music Canada.

Asked why he chose to sign with that Canadian indy label, Sharpe explains that it all began with Canadian Idol musical director Orin Isaacs.

"He'd told me if there was anything he could do to help me out after the show, to call.

"So, I went home for a couple of weeks, then called and came to Toronto. ... I just didn't want to wait. We did some demoing and once my contract was up from Idol, we took a listen to what we'd laid down, and it turned out really well. We said, 'We've got a CD here'. I was so excited. We did some mixing and just went on with it and made a CD."

Sharpe is in Toronto today, and while there's no release party planned, he's hoping to mark the event in his own way.

"I'm up here with my Dad and a lot of my family's up here, so maybe we'll get together and go out for dinner or something like that."

Sharpe's enthusiastic about today's release, and what lies ahead for his career.

"It really blows me away, knowing I'm going to have a CD out. I just sit down at night and think about it and it's really hard to believe. It's something you plan and want so bad and think it'll never happen. Now that it's actually happening to me, it's so overwhelming. ... It's going really great and my dreams are actually coming true."

Craig, we are so proud of you. My husband and I drove all over town the last few weeks of the show, in order to find a payphone that wasn't being used to vote (the house ones didn't work) it was tough but we managed, LOL. Whatever the future holds for you I'm sure you'll do great.....
