Burlington native keeping busy and working to build career

There aren't many people milling the baggage area at this hour.

It's after 1 a.m. on June 10. Rex Goudie has just stepped off an airplane at St. John's International Airport.

There aren't many people milling the baggage area at this hour.

After piling several suitcases and his guitar on a cart, Goudie heads towards the door.

Before reaching the exit, he's spotted by several adults.

When the women ask the Burlington native for his autograph, Goudie smiles and signs a piece of paper that they've put in front of him.

Three years after nabbing second place on Canadian Idol, there are times, such as this, when Goudie remains under the lights.

Several days later, Goudie is back at the airport again. This time he's there to pick up a band member who has come from Toronto to play with him at two shows at the Princess Sheila NaGeira Theatre in Carbonear on June 13 and 14.

Living in Toronto

Goudie is living in Toronto these days.

The move was necessary, he says, in order to pursue a career as a singer and songwriter.

Goudie's debut album, "Under the Lights" reached platinum status shortly after its release, earning him two Juno nominations.

His second album, "Look Closer," released in 2006, did not shine as brightly. However, in 2007 he received the Canadian Radio Music Award for Best New Solo Artist.

Goudie also attended songwriting school in Nashville in 2007.

"It's obviously mostly country music, but there are also a lot of people there who want to write rock music," he says.

During his recent visit to the province, Goudie took part in the Learning Disabilities Association of Newfoundland and Labrador's (LDANL) annual fundraiser Blind Date With A Star.

He also did promotional gigs for his third cruise with Universal Travel, which takes place in early February 2009.

"The cruise will leave from Fort Lauderdale. We had a great time the last two trips. It's like a kitchen party on a cruise ship in the middle of the Caribbean," he says.

Goudie will be back in the province again, however, before sailing the seas.

In August he'll perform in Gander and Marystown.

In the meantime, he's spending his time writing songs for a new album that will be released late this fall or early in 2009.

Before that, however, he'll treat his fans to a "teaser" when he releases "a little surprise" later this summer.

Holding his cards close to his chest, Goudie says the songs will be produced by Mike Borkosky, who has produced and engineered recordings by illScarlet, Low Level Flight, The Dupes, Phoenix Park and as well as his self-titled project, Bork.

In addition to Goudie's music career, he has also been eyeballed as an up-and-coming actor. When suggested that he get an agent, he did just that.

He's represented by native Newfoundlander Allan Hawco, who runs his own theatre company in Toronto.

Putting on goalie pads five or six times a week not only keeps Goudie in shape but his net-minding duties have brought in some networking that he'd otherwise have missed.

"I got some corporate shows because of my hockey playing," Goudie says.

Misses home

While he enjoys his new life in Toronto and has played with well-known artists, including John Allan Cameron's son Stuart, Goudie admits missing family and friends at home.

"I've got a new nephew and I just want to see him now. But I won't get to do that until my August trip," he says.

Goudie is confident he's on the right track where his career as a performing artist is concerned.

Things are lining up for him, he says.

"I've got a professional team behind me. I've got my foot in the door now. So, I'm going to try to run with it."
