It was a proud, but emotional moment for the O'Mahony family, as the province's newest long-term care facility was named in honour of Dr. Albert O'Mahony.
The late doctor's wife, Donna, and children Michael, David and Ashling were guests of honour at the grand opening of the facility in Clarenville today.
"How fitting," said Health Minister Ross Wiseman, "that many of these residents here today were patients of his, and their children and grandchildren were his patients as well.
"His memory will live on," said Wiseman, "not only by the name on this facility but in how he touched so many lives."
The new CEO of Eastern Health, Vicki Kaminski, noted that as she was introduced to people invited to the grand opening, she heard many stories of Dr. O'Mahony.
"I've heard stories of remarkable compassion, of his keeping vigils at bedsides until a crisis had passed."
More than 200 people were at the grand opening, seated in the Great Room or on the patio just outside.
The 44-bed long-term care facility, which came at a cost of $22 million, comes after nearly three decades of lobbying by local people.
