Newfoundland comic Mary Walsh is taking on the persona of an uncouth punk rocker for a half-hour comedy pilot she's created for Showcase.

The proposed series is called "Rise Up" and features writers from "Corner Gas" and "Degrassi".

It's about a strong-willed ex-punk rocker named Siouxie Power who wins the $100-million Atlantic Super Lottery and moves her family from small-town Newfoundland to a tony Toronto enclave.

The premise suggests plenty of opportunity for Walsh to display the brash buffoonery she perfected on the satirical series "This Hour Has 22 Minutes."

Canwest says the pilot throws Siouxie into a host of awkward situations, including being mistaken for domestic help, arrested for disturbing the peace and throwing an unwelcomed charity bash for her neighbours.

Canwest says the pilot, which has not been greenlit for a series, will be shot in the fall.
