Workers at Vale Inco's Voisey's Bay nickel mine are expected to be on strike today after the union resoundingly rejected a contract offer earlier this month.
The 450 steelworkers' union members at the Voisey's Bay mine and nickel-processing concentrator voted 99 per cent against the company's offer on July 8.
The strike took effect at 12:01 a.m. today. At issue was the proposed elimination of a bonus tied to the price of nickel and a plan to close the company's defined benefit pension plan to new employees. Those same issues caused talks to break down between Vale and 3,000 employees at its Sudbury operations in Northern Ontario.
"We will be obviously focusing on two things. One, making sure there is an orderly transition so we can have our employees who are on strike brought back to their communities, and we will also then be making necessary arrangements to place the site in a maintenance mode," said Bob Carter, a spokesman for the company.
