A missing Dunville woman's pet dog helped searchers find her in a wooded area Tuesday night after she had been missing for eight hours.
The dog, which had remained by the woman's side, started barking as searchers approached the area.
At 11:30 p.m. Placentia RCMP responded to a residence in Dunville after a family member reported a 51-year-old woman missing.
With the assistance of area residents and a RCMP police dog, the woman was located in the wooded area suffering from mild hypothermia and the effects of a pre-existing medical condition.
The woman was transported by ambulance to the Placentia Health Centre for observation.

T from ab you're an idiot. I have two pampered and well-trained top hunting dogs, and have had intelligent hunting dogs for 44 years. I agree with the rest of what you say and am aware of animals' abilities as you've pointed out. You're not the only one who has heard these claims and studies so don't be so naive. Speaking of naive... I'm also a realist and don't spend much time believing in fantasies of dog love and respect, these are not sentient beings and I suggest you do some research on ethology (of animals) to comprehend this. I still think it's a wonderful story, even though bleeding heart types like you can't see the forest through the trees and make something of this that isn't. We need more rational people in this world (as you've already pointed out), and ironically you're part of the problem.

Graham you're an idiot. Talk about grasping at straws to make a nice story into something more then it is. You'd be surprised how a dog will react when it's owner is in distress. The first instinct of a dog is to protect it's master for lack of a better word.
There have been studies conducted that dogs have the ability to pick up cancerous cells in people faster then hospital testing can.
You remind of people who think that humans are the superior being but yet fail to realize that while we may be the most intelligent animals species, we are also the stupidest too. There are always people in this world who are either to dumb to think good of an animal and niave to think that an animal could not or would not be capable of the actions of this little one last night. I know this story and i also know the person involved. She would rather die herself than to have any harm come to any animal. Her life is devoted to taking care of any animal that comes her way and you would never in this world find a better home for an animal. Has for Graham and his working dogs or hunting dogs whatever name he chooses to call it, shame shame. Maybe he is an exception to the rule and his dogs are loved and kept warm thro all environments but what i have seen in a hunting dogs is mostly the animal is to scared to disobey and kept in cages in the outdoors when not working. If that so be the case then you should never own a dog to start with. This little dog is treated better than most kids i know and also the remainder of her animals which is quite a few. So yes that little pooch helped in saving this lady and no doubt in my mind she would and could do it again. Bless you baby dog, you are a HERO.

Who cares what motivated the dog to bark? Though the story leads one to believe the searchers found the woman as a result of the barking dog... Furthermore, dogs protect their pack, and dogs regard their owners as part of the pack. So I guess it's not so much a matter of personifying the dog, but rather, the other way around. At least from the dog's perspective anyway.
Tell me... Do you go to the malls at Christmas time and tell the kids that it's not really Santa's lap that they're sitting on? What a dufess! -

I don't necessarily agree with Graham on all points. I understand the value of certain animals abilities and propensities to perform particluar tasks and their effect on some owners physical and mental well being. However I find humans misplaced personified emotional attachment to their pets, and the embarrassing amounts of money they lavish on them to be deplorable. All one has to do is visit the pet aisle in any supermarket or department store to realize that we humans place far too much emphasis on our pets.
The number of humans starving to death and dying of curable diseases is continually increasing each and every day. It's shameful we hold our pets in higher regard. Yes, cats and dogs are cute, sweet, adorable creatures that humans bred into existence. I agree with Graham when he says let's not personify them too much. -

It is very heart-warming to read a story that has such a great ending. I hope the lady is all right and that her and her dog can recuperate from the ordeal back home. She is probably very lucky that she had her dog with her. I'm sure he/she would have tried to help keep her warm and alert until help arrived.
I was told of a story from up north where a man ended up in poor weather so he cut his lead dog loose and when it showed up at his home without him the other men followed him and he let there to where the troubled man was- he was in a hole the other dogs from the sled team had dug for him and were lying across him to keep him warm. Animals are quite amazing and it's nice to see them get credit where it's due.
As for the ranting about people who over-load their dog/pets with too much luxury- more then what some people will ever have in their life, but, for every dog/pet that's treated like that there's many more who are living in deplorable conditions- some in puppy mills, continuing to be over bred again and again, and others in your neighbours back yard, neglected, abused, and living alone tied on to a tree. People over bred these animals and people mis-treat them when, it is people that these domesticated animals depend on for food, shelter, and companionship. For some people they are a disposable possession and it's a shame because that's part of why the animal shelters are full and it's sad. -

Try not to personify animals too much, the article does not state that the dog was or was not on a leash. Maybe the dog stayed at the woman's side because she didn't want it to get lost and it was tied on ! Again, try not to personify animals too much, perhaps the dog was barking at movement or sounds in the woods like many dogs would do. Perhaps the searchers were on top of the woman causing it to bark, or it was barking at other animals or even barking because it wanted to get off the leash ! In the end, the dog may or may not have helped the rescue, because I am sure with assistance of area residents and an RCMP police dog, she would have been found anyways. It's not like you can hear a dog yap several kilometers away through a wooded area. Sometimes you can't hear your hunting buddy call out to you 50 feet away in some woods. But if it makes you feel better believing that the dog consciously knew what it was doing in some kind of Lassie type of way, and that it's a hero and all that sort of stuff, then that's great. I'd say the most valuable role that dog played was keeping the woman company and keeping up her spirits which would be good enough for me.

It's a nice story. I don't see why it's necessary to pull it apart. The point of the story is that the lady was saved, and that her dog may have played some role in that. And while I agree that I don't think graham is an animal lover, even though he has dogs, he does have some valid points. The lady would probably have been found anyway. However I do think that the dog barking probably helped. Graham, people might not be able to hear a dog barking through the woods, but keep in mind that other dogs probably can. So the pet may have played some role.

There is also a lesson to be learned by the people who put little value on an animals life. When you think about the animals out there who are abused and are given very little care or love, one should realize that animals do have some form of feelings whether it is love or loyality. I hope this story will help those who see animals as worthless or just a posession to think twice.
