I am a mother of three, and we will not be getting the vaccine for H1N1. I have done my own research (Health Canada) and have opted not to continue using the Clean, Cover, Contain method. This flu can kill - however, so can the common flu. Keeping my kids from school when they are ill, using soap and water on their hands and the surfaces they use have kept them healthy each season without the common flu shot. I truly believe that it will help us weather this storm as well. The media however needs to stop reporting for panic purposes. This flu was here this spring as well, without the vaccine. I am not disagreeing with anyone getting the shot - that is your right, but please don't belittle my right to chose not to get it.

You know in the 1970's people would drink and drive regularily and smoke with their kids in the car. Thats about as revelant to this topic as Mrs. Hoskins statements. Do you know how many people would die each year if there were no such thing as vaccinations. If you don't want to get the shot that is your choice but stop intimidating people with your backwards thinking, and misinformation. For you to not immunize your child and yourself you are endangering your family and the sensible people out there who chose to do this. Very selfish and ignorant. I really think the government needs to make some formal announcement over the television, radio, whatever, concerning that TRUE facts about this vaccine. The media has blown this out of proportion, along with ignorant individuals who know nothing about the matter, only what they hear from the media. The vaccine being administered in Canada is different from the one being administered in the states. Wake up people! There are so many more cases of this virus then that which is released to the media. There are at the present 7 kids in the Janeway and 2 adults at the HSC with this. These are the stats we hear not about the many many that are home because they are fortunate not to have breathing difficulty. This virus is not being routinely tested on everyone that enters the hospital with flu symptoms only those that are being admitted to protect the staff and their care givers. For those of you that refuse to get the vaccine for you or your family. Do the rest of the population a favor! If you or someone in your family has as much as a cough stay home. You are not getting extra points from anyone from going to work or school sick. In fact what you are doing is placing the rest of us at risk for catching whatever you have. Everyday we all have to come into contact with other people and the least that each one of us can do is this. We have been fortunate that we have not lost a child in this province due to this. But as a human being we have a responsibility not to infect others and risk it.

There is not enough information on this vaccine. I'm between a rock and a hard place.

The reality of the situation is that the vaccine has not been thoroughly tested.
Health Canada approved the H1N1 vaccine without evaluating its safety and effectiveness in a single Canadian. Instead it approved it based on the results of a small clinical trial conducted in Belgium.

Even in cases where there have been clinical trials they have been rushed and used a small number of individuals. Small clinical studies do not produce reliable results.

We still have absolutely no idea what the long term effects of this vaccine might be. That is why I am not getting the vaccine. If I get sick I will stay home and recover but I will not get injected with a poorly tested vaccine.

Isn't it ironic that the schools are emptying of students ill with flu or flu-like symptoms, yet, Eastern Health is scheduling clinics in school gymnasiums. KNow the facts people! Just becasue you get the shot does not mean you will not get H1N1. the germs are airborne. Those who have the shot can still carry the germs with them.

People need to be informed. I have heard similar stories about the chicken pox vaccine. Parents refuse to believe their kids can still get eh chicken pox even though they have had the vaccine. Instead they insist because they had it they are fine and send their kids on the merry way while carrying the virus.

The solution is simple parents-- purchase a thermometer for $10 at your local walmart, if your child (or you) have a temperature STAY HOME!

I will not be getting the vaccine as I am allergic to some of the ingredients used to make the concoction. But even if I wasn't I don't believe i would give in to all the hype. THe regular flu is just as deadly but you don't hear about that every night on the news now, Do ya? I'll have to take my chances with the old clean, cover and contain approach.

The kids that are off school for the flu, are recovering at the local malls. This so called flu is taking an unusual path, it's only hit the schools, c'mon the kids are yanking your chain - get them back in school. There's no other sector, ie business or the university that's reporting high absenteeism. This isn't the plague, it's a few sniffles and you're over your seasonal cold in a week. People in a panic over nothing - what a crowd of sissies.

I don't understand why the schools don't let the parents know if there are cases of the H1N1 in the school so they can take their children out of school until they get the vaccination. If there is lice going around in your classroom they send a letter home to let you know. But this virus can be deadly and they don't notify parents if it's in their school. something isn't right here.

I'm not too impressed with the journalistic ethics displayed in this piece. Ms. Hoskins seems to have told the reporter that there are reports about abnormalities showing up generations down the road. This is pure fear mongering. Where are these reports? Have they been scientifically reviewed? Ms. Hoskins is not a medical professional, and should not be seen as a source of medical advice, which is what is happening in this article. This is the type of thing that raises doubts in people's minds about being vaccinated, and it could lead to lives being lost from the decision not to receive the vaccine. The reporter and editors at the Telegram need to move beyond innuendo and rumour on such an important public health issue.

I think the H1N1 is quickly spreading through the hospitals and schools. I think it should be encouraged and ensured that all employees stay home if any signs the flu or sent home if they come to work sick. It also may be a good idea for nurses to be given the vaccine on the units and administer it to themselves which would then free up the public health nurses to start administration to the public at highest risk sooner rather than later. Maybe they could close the schools and get the kids the vaccine and reopen when they have immunity... Hospitals could perhaps abolish there current sick leave policy to encourage staff who are ill to stay home while contagious thus reducing the spread of infection.. Just an idea!

  • GET THE SHOT!

The health board did right by vaccinating the people working at the hospital first but the schools should have been next in line. Let face it the schools are where most of the viruses are spread. A child in school comes into contact with a lot more people in the run of a day, than the average person and it takes place in a confined space. They need to set up a mass immunization in the schools for children, whose parents want them to have this vaccination, it only makes sense.

as a healthcare worker, i received my shot on monday. i, as mnay others, was on the fence about getting it, relying on information everyone else was giving me. i then decided to research it myself and make my own EDUCATED decision. and by research, i mean CDC and Public health websites, not newspapers and news websites, who will sensationalize everything, and make it impossible to make an educated decision. as a pregnant health care worker, it was best for me to get the shot. it's not only about me and my opinions anymore; in a few months, i'll have a baby to consider. a baby who will be too young to receive a vaccination him/herself.
i'm not pressing anyone to get the vaccination, just make your own educated decision based on your own research, not heresay.

Schools should be opened for a day for ALL students to be vaccinated (that is if mom and dad don't choose to chance their kids' lives) and then closed for 15 days to let it kick in and give a chance for those who are sick to get better.

I can't see how this is sooo complicated. Is our government not seing that people are panicking?

Only 46 million took the vaccine which left millions of Americans without.Judging by your calculation 20 million without should have died. But they didn,t.
The biggest point made in this 60 Minutes investigative report was 4000 people got sick some more than others and the head of the CDC at the time was told about it.No warning was issued to the US population.

I have received the vaccine at work this week. It makes me sick that I have to wait until next week so my children can get it. I would rather get it for my children first before myself.
I come to find out that the vaccine was offered at Motor Vechile in Mount Pearl for Doctors, Nurses, Health care workers and their children lastnight. Which is fine I guess. But I work in a Place that deals with Health care and it wasn't offered for my children the same time I was receiving it. I then find out that a non health care worker brings her children to this clinic in Motor Vechile lastnight and lied that she was a health care worker that will be out of town next week and both her children were vaccinated with this vaccine. It is totally wrong how people can do this and get away with it. If I had of known this I would of had my children there as well. We all want our children vaccinated and we shouldn't have to wait until next week when people are getting it earlier by lying.

OK, I can see most of your points and concerns are legit, but Gossett, your a fool. To think that you would put your kids health at risk because you think that a vaccine is Junk . Get real, where are your priorities, you need to get out and get yourself and everyone in the house vaccinated for both the H1N1 and the seasonal flu, that is unless you want your kids sick and on unnecessary medications and possibly worse.

I hope the vaccine is NOT administred in the schools. I dont want my kid injected with that junk. I hope he is not injecteed without my knowledge. There better be a permission slip sent home first...I will NOT be giving permission.

About the H1N1 flu shot, no one knows what to really do. I asked my family Doctor and him and his family is going to get it so guess that tells me it must be ok.

I was up half the night thinking about this. I don't know what to do either. Get the shot of not?? I want to take my kids out of school but it can't be done. I need to work. There is not enough information on this vaccine. After I heard about the 13 year old that died I was all about getting my kids the vaccine but now after reading this, she talks about all the people who have died from it.

We are all being told to avoid large gatherings -- yet hundreds will converge on some schools next week for the clinics bringing all their germs with them!!! Hello? where is the common sense here?

MJ is right on the money, let's get moving here and set-up an in school vaccination program right now after the health care workers, then next in line should be the next most at risk. My understanding is that is what is happening with other Provinces like PEI

For the love of Pete go to school and get on with your daily lives... not only are we the biggest winers in the country, but we are the most gullible as well... if you think this H1N1 shot is going to protect you think again... all it will do in the long run is lower your resistance and the human body will begin its magic mutations and over time no vaccine will be of any help... (pennicillen ring a bell anyone)...

And Saucy Face might want to know that over 4000 people in the US got sick from the shot in 1976 and hundreds got neurological damage which resulted in parayisis.

60 Minutes did a story on it here's the link.

    July 01, 2010 - 19:58

Anyone who doesn't get the H1N1 shot is being RECKLESS and IRRESPONSIBLE. I urge you to get the shot. We need to protect our kids and people with weakened immune systems. Do it for the sake of everyone, not just yourself!

All the mis-information and doubt just means shorter lines at the clinic for me and mine when we get our shots. Healthy kids are dying within a 48 hour window, and some people still questioning get a shot? Unbelieveable...

  • What????
    July 01, 2010 - 19:54

I thought for sure that school kids would receive the vaccination AT SCHOOL. Would that show too much common sense for the health care system? So is it better to disrupt everyone's life by taking kids out of school, missing work, standing in a clinic lineup for hours on end, and most of all, mixing with huge crowds that you would normally not come in contact with?

The US Surgeon General said on that very same 60 Minutes episode that without the vaccine upwards of 20 million or more would have died.

BUT, you must have missed that part when you were getting another beer. Because if you had heard it, I'm sure you would have given Sandy and Saucy Face both sides of that story, now wouldn't you?

HAHA! Anne you hit it right on the nose! Way too much information but nothing from those we need it from.

OH!!! And by the way...WHO in their right mind will be showing up at that ROYAL VISIT!!!! We are apparently being encouraged to go to it by the provincial government... HONESTLY!?!

Hey Shawn from Corner Brook you obviously must have watched a different video.
Big Pharma has a credibilty problem. There is enough info out there to warrant this,Vioxx being one example
By the way I got better things to be at than drinking beer in the middle of the afternoon.

Very Disgusted with the Health Care System and the Government.

Well my child is not recovering in no Local Mall John and is very very ill. This is no common cold he has, and believe me, he has had plenty since he started school. Let's face it, kids are dirty...no matter what we teach them. And I agree with everyone who has said the vaccinations should be done in school. What is different about this vaccination, then the one my son had in grade 9 or grade 4 and that was done in school?? And to add...people are scared of the unknown John. I would not chop that up to being a bunch of sissies. Wouldn't you do anything to protect your child????
