The Writers' Alliance of Newfoundland and Labrador (WANL) and the Literary Arts Foundation of Newfoundland and Labrador have announced the shortlist for the 2009 Fresh Fish Award for Emerging Writers.
One of the country's richest writing prizes for new authors, this award offers a lucrative cash prize, professional editing services, and a plaque for the best unpublished manuscript written by a resident of the province who has not published in book form.
In this, the award's fourth year, the three finalists are (in alphabetical order):
• Dave Andrews for his short story collection, "West Orange";
• Danielle Devereaux for her poetry collection, "The Chrome Chair",
• Andreae Prozesky for her poetry collection, "sparrows, sparks."
David Andrews is a writer and musician in St. John's. He is currently serving as program co-ordinator with Visual Arts Newfoundland and Labrador and is busy researching and writing a novel.
Danielle Devereaux is a writer from St. John's. Her work has most recently appeared in Riddle Fence: A Journal of Arts and Culture. She has taught Women's Studies at Memorial University and is working on a Ph.D. in Communications from Concordia University, MontrÉal.
Andreae Prozesky is from St. John's. Her poems and essays have appeared in The New Quarterly, Maisonneuve, and on CBC Radio. She writes the popular Food Nerd column for alternative paper The Scope, and has won a number of awards for poetry, including McGill University's Shapiro Award for Creative Writing and several NL Arts and Letters Awards.
The announcement of this year's winner will be the highlight of WANL's annual "Christmas At The Ship" on Monday, Nov. 30 at The Ship in St. John's. The evening will begin at 8 p.m.
