Storytelling

St. John's-based artist Mary MacDonald is asking for help from the public in developing a new contemporary art installation for the downtown called The Duck-worth Project.

"The idea is that people will share stories of Duckworth Street, their experience of Duckworth Street," said MacDonald.

St. John's-based artist Mary MacDonald is asking for help from the public in developing a new contemporary art installation for the downtown called The Duck-worth Project.

"The idea is that people will share stories of Duckworth Street, their experience of Duckworth Street," said MacDonald.

"I'll be taking those stories and turning them into drawings and an animation."

The video is expected to premiere in a downtown storefront window sometime this year.

Stories can be of any length, tone and subject. To spark ideas, MacDonald is asking, "What did you see/do/experience on Duck-worth Street?"

"I hope it will be kind of a varied interpretation of the street," said the artist. "I want it to be kind of a real reflection of what happens."

MacDonald said the history of the province is often explored, as well as the province, from a tourism perspective.

"We don't talk as much about what happens today.

"And I think it's kind of important to have the conversation about what happens in the space around you," she said.

The Duckworth Project is not the first community project the artist has worked on. A previous piece came from notebooks and fridge fronts.

"I asked people for their 'to do' lists, and I blew them up and put them on a banner," she said.

While some artists use paints or clay, MacDonald chooses to work with items connected to personal experiences - in particular experiences of daily life.

The artist moved to St. John's about two years ago and is currently an assistant director at Eastern Edge Gallery.

A fine arts graduate of Mount Allison University, she is also a member of artist-run centres across the Maritimes, a member of the Arts Advocacy Committee for the Atlantic Provinces Art Gallery Association and membership co-ordinator for the Association of Artist-Run Centres from the Atlantic. She also works as a freelance curator.

"The Duckworth Project" has received support from the Newfoundland and Labrador Arts Council.
