St. John's accommodators are reporting a 2.2 per cent increase in sales over 2008, despite many destinations in Canada reporting significant losses in room night sales.
"Eastern Newfoundland continues to be a magnet for all manner of visitor; reflecting the strength of our people, our culture and the natural beauty of our province," said Destination St. John's CEO Keith Healey.
According to a news release, in 2009, St. John's recorded another record year of room night sales - a total of 570,190 room nights.
The number is up from 2008 by nearly 12,000 room nights.
Average occupancy for the year was 66.58 per cent, up from 66.02 per cent in 2008, while the average rate for a room climbed by $2.50 to $123.55.
Mark McCarthy, chairman of the board of Destination St. John's, said 2009 was a difficult year for tourism in many parts of Canada.
"It is clear that our destination fared much better than many other locations and this is reflective of both the strength of our economy and the strong desire that people have to visit here," McCarthy said.

How much better would it be if the travel costs to get there were more reasonable.
Also booking directly through a car rental place there is a rip off. Only limited km's compared to if you booked the same car through Expedia.
Hospitality staff need a little better training as well. Not quite as responsive as in other areas of North America. -
