A nurse from Elmira, Ont., has been confirmed dead in an earthquake that devastated Haiti.
Lou Geense, the director of global initiatives with the Emmanuel Missionary Church of Canada, says the nurse was one of seven people who arrived in Haiti's capital Port-au-Prince on Tuesday afternoon.
The group arrived about 90 minutes before the earthquake hit and had just settled into a guest house when the ground began to tremble and the shelter collapsed.
The nurse, whose name has not been released, was the only one of her group who did not survive. Her body was discovered this afternoon.
Geense says the group was working in Haiti to set up five or six mobile clinics in poor rural areas.
Most of the nurses are said to be from the Elmira area in southern Ontario, but one nurse is from Barrie, Ont.
