An international development organization run by the Catholic Church in Canada has launched an emergency appeal to support humanitarian aid relief for earthquake victims in Haiti.
Development and Peace has committed a first pledge of $50,000 to Caritas Haiti, which runs 200 medical clinics in the country, but is in dire need of financial resources to respond to the growing humanitarian needs.
Tens of thousands of Haitians are believed to have died following Tuesday's 7.0-magnitutde earthquake. The Caribbean country is among the poorest countries in the Western hemisphere.
Officials with Development Peace are still waiting for news on the safety and well-being of many of its partners in the country, said Michael Casey, Executive Director of Development and Peace.
"Our thoughts are with the people of Haiti in this time of crisis," he said.
The national president of Development and Peace is Pat Hogan of St. John's.
Hogan is a retired junior high-school principal who first became sensitized to international development as a teacher in Zambia.
He has served on the organization's national council since 2004.
All donations made to Development and Peace will be sent directly to its partners on the ground in Haiti, mainly Caritas Haiti.
Last year, Development and Peace supported eight community development projects in Haiti and provided funds for four emergencies, totalling $600,000.
Donations to Development and Peace for the Haiti crisis can be made by phone (1-888-664-3387), on its website or by sending a cheque marked Haiti Emergency to the following address: Development and Peace, 1425 RenÉ-LÉvesque Blvd. W, 3rd Floor, Montreal, QC, H3G 1T7.
Development and Peace has about 13,000 members in Canada.
