A new damning report takes a critical look at the North American cruise ship industry, calling for more stringent regulations to halt the environmental pollution caused by the massive boats.
Getting a Grip on Cruise Ship Pollution was authored by Dr. Ross Klein, a professor at Memorial University's School of Social Work, and an expert on the cruise ship industry. It was released by the U.S.-based environmental group Friends of the Earth.
According to a news release, Klein researched a multitude of industry issues including the history of environmental violations, the types of pollution produced, and the modest number of environmental laws that govern the industry.
He offers a wide-ranging set of policy recommendations, providing solutions for comprehensive environmental reform of the cruise industry which earns billions of dollars a year around the globe.
"The report lays out the deleterious effects of pollution from cruise ships - many having significantly negative impacts on human health and the health of the marine environment," Klein said.
"The report is a continuation of my writing and research about environmental issues related to the cruise industry."
Since 1998, Klein said the cruise industry has been fined more than $60 million for environmental violations.

The cruise ship industry is one of the worst in terms of environmental damage. While the passengers attention is directed on other things like booze and gambling,these ships are dumping so many toxins into the ocean it just boggles the mind. Dennis O'keefe must be dumber than dumb to be promoting the cruise ships for St.John's. I have worked in the service industry for years and I can assure you,the only people who profit from cruise ships are the petroleum industry,and the City that sells our water (even though we,the citizens aren't allowed to take a shower).The passengers on cruise ships are there because of the all inclusive package.They do not spend one cent on anything else. Then the City has the unmitigated gall to provide samaritans /volunteers to help these passengers navigate the downtown area.If there is so much spin-off from cruise ships why can't people get PAID for providing this service? No wonder the minimum wage can keep rising.All the people who can afford to pay decent wages are getting away with subsized wages and/or volunteer staffing. Councillor O'Leary should go on a cruise and bring LOTS of film/memory cards. The few Tim Horton's cups and discarded tires would pale by comparison.
