Vale Inco Newfoundland and Labrador says it has submitted a new "comprehensive" offer Wednesday to the union representing striking workers at the Voisey's Bay nickel mine.

Workers have been on strike since Aug. 1.

"That offer addresses both language and monetary items," said Bob Carter, spokesman for Vale Inco.

"We asked that the negotiator bring the offer forward to the bargaining committee.

"We certainly believe that it contains a framework for resolution of the strike."

The company is not publicly releasing details of its offer to the United Steelworkers, Local 9508.

"We're continuing to evaluate our options, and in our view the best option for us is to bring a quick resolution to the strike in a way that meets the needs of both the business and our employees," Carter said.

A key issue in the labour dispute is the employee nickel bonus, which is tied to the price of nickel. Vale Inco wants to replace it with a performance-based bonus.
