Environment Canada is predicting 15 centimetres of snow today over the northern Avalon and Burin peninsulas and up to 25 centimetres for eastern parts of the southern Avalon Peninsula.
Most schools in the area of the storm have been closed for the day.
Light snow associated with the system began this morning and is expected to become heavy this afternoon, with blowing snow over exposed areas. High minus 2.
Winds are predicted to blow east 30 km/h gusting to 50 this morning, then northeast 40 gusting to 60 this afternoon. Strong northerly winds will develop over the Burin and Avalon peninsulas later this afternoon reducing visibilities in blowing snow.
Conditions are forecast to improve this evening as the low continues to move northeastward away from the island.
The outlook for Friday is cloudy skies, with a few flurries beginning in the afternoon.
