The Canadian Red Cross is urging residents of Newfoundland and Labrador to be safe when out on the ice this winter.
"Many ponds and waterways simply do not have the necessary ice thickness to be considered safe for activities such as skating or snowmobiling," says Wayne Young, director of injury prevention for the Canadian Red Cross in Atlantic Canada.
Young recommends people create a safe zone by drilling six holes around the perimeter and measuring the ice to ensure it is sufficiently thick. This should be done with the supervision of at least one adult.
Ice thickness should be 15 cm for walking or skating, 20 cm for a larger group of people and 25 cm for snowmobiles or ATVs.
Many factors influence ice thickness, from springs running underground to currents. The Red Cross recommends checking with local authorities before venturing on ice.
