A 57-year-old man was charged with impaired driving Thursday evening in the east end of St. John's after citizens who witnessed the man hitting a parked vehicle prevented him from leaving until police officers arrived.

The people who held the impaired driver are to be commended. It is about time people started to take action against this other than looking away from it. Because of those people, this man was unable to bring harm/tragedy to himself or to others.

Nice Ed, so some woman standing 5'2 weighing a buck-ten should try to stop someone from leaving the scene of an accident? You're an idiot. If everyone started trying to stop crimes themselves there would be mayhem. I'm a coward because I wouldnt try and physically restrain someone who is liable to run me down with their car? If the definition of being a coward is not wanting to step in front of a moving vehicle, then yes I am a coward.

In Ontario this is considered kidnapping. Look it up, Toronto shop keeper charged for detaining shoplifter. I sure hope the RNC are able to charge those that committed this kidnapping as well no matter what the offender may or may not have done. I think the drunks need to be removed from our roads, but we still need to follow the laws of this country. The public can not determine charges, or did Danny change that law and forget to tell us?

A very righteous act to be sure, however james got it right. You take the plate number, note the direction the vehicle is going and call the police. Or follow the individual and inform police on their whereabouts. The people who detained this drunk driver are lucky the fool didnt get behind the wheel and try to run them over. Thats like saying you should detain someone who robs a convenience store with a knife, Makes perfect sense til you get stabbed. Yes, someone could have been injured, but someone could have been injured for trying to be a good citizen and stopping this person too.
