An 18-year-old man is in hospital in critical condition after being struck by a vehicle as he walked along Blackmarsh Road in St. John's early Wednesday evening.
The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary says they responded to the call about 6:40 p.m.
Police cars cordoned off the area as officers investigated the incident.
Further details when they become available.

Blue Ink and Willie you are both so so right. They think they have absolute right of way and can walk anywhere in the street. They wear dark clothes with their hoodie's up over their heads and backs to traffic, and god forbid, something happens.. a bee line to the lawyers.. sometimes i think they do this just to get a quick buck! I know a poor guy that just tapped a woman in a parking lot and she fell down.. no injuries, no ambulance, but she ran to the lawyer and got a hefty buck for it.. no wonder everyone's insurance is thru the roof... i'm just sayin... scammers really makes my blood boil!!

I have been travelling to St. John's since 1993. While being one of the nicest cities around it is not the safest city to walk or drive.
I tried to cross at a designated crosswalk in front of the Delta Hotel. Cars were travelling well in access of 50 km/hour. It was dangerous yet it seems to be tolerated.
I remember thinking to myself as I watched a man walk by me in dark clothes and a hoody: This guy is going to get hit! No one will see him!
As unsafe as it is to walk it is even harder to drive as people seem to walk out of nowhere.
It is a problem from both points of view.
I hope the young man makes a full recovery, I also hope City hall takes a good look at the problem from both perspectives. -

More of a general comment though, how many do you see out walking with their back to traffic, or wearing all-dark clothing making them hard to see? Way to many in my observations. While we do not know the details of this unfortunate case, this might be a good reminder for people all the same. -

You certainly can't make a blanket statement about whether drivers or pedestrians are at fault in these sorts of situations. Sure, there are a lot of people driving around like power-mad imbeciles but there are a fair number of pedestrians doing ridiculous things too.
For example, I've seen more than a few people walk straight onto a crosswalk (not on a traffic light) without even looking to see if anything was coming. I don't care what you think your rights are, cars just don't stop instantly and your rights aren't going to keep you from getting smashed. -

You do see a lot of people around walking out in the middle of the street, and joggers running in the street. They should be more careful. Linda, where in the article does it say this guy was on the sidewalk? He may have been crossing the road for all we know. However, motorists also need to give some right of way to pedestrians people. Yes, someone out after dark with all dark clothes on is endangering themselves needlessly. But a student trying to get to school in the middle of the winter in the middle of the day deserves to arive where they are going with dry feet. Walking on the un-ploughed sidewalks in St. John's is not always an option. I'm not saying people should be walking side by side down a busy street because of a bit of slush on the sidewalks, but if a sidewalk is not ploughed and someone is trying to make their trek around the city a little more managable by walking on the side of the road, be courteous and slow down when you pass them.

And lets not blame this poor young man! Yes, I become nervous when I am approaching pedestrians walking along the road.. but seriously, what do you expect? So because this poor young man didn't drive (maybe he couldn't afford a car) you think he should stay home all winter because most of us drivers fail to slow down and stay out of the way of pedestrians!
This was a tragic accident, plain and simple.. I just hope the poor driver of the car is doing alright and that this young boy makes a speedy and full recovery! Him and his family will be in my prayers until he does! -

First, I hope this kid makes a full recovery. With that said, roads are for cars, not walkers. If the sidewalks are not cleared, or if there are no sidewalk, do not walk there. I know myself, I see way to many people walking on the roads, on the wrong side, with all black cloths on, right out in the lane. Also some people have a sense of entitlement, like they own the road, they cross whenever they want, without looking and sometimes you see walkers, joggers running on the road side by side with another person. Like do these people want to get hit? I think the traffic cops should be out ticketing these walker/joggers/biker riders for moving violations, they are obstructing traffic and are creating a very dangerous situation.

This young man is in the hospital right now fighting for his life..show some compassion people. Stop pointing fingers and trying to blame who is right or wrong. It is a tragic thing that happened and pointing fingers will not change a thing. Why not focus on praying that this young man survives.
Regardless of how shameless some of you can be, I am sure we all have a heart. Why not put it to good use and pray he makes it through. -

I have to disagree here, a few years ago, at 3:30 in the afternoon, I crossed on a crosswalk to get to my side of the road, I was literally about 45 seconds from reaching the stairs to get to my house and I had my back to traffic, 45 seconds, K, a car comes along, flying, I might add and hit my arm, he hit me with his side view mirror and it cracked off. He stopped, got out and said, oh there it is. He said it was my fault, the sun was in his eyes,I said all the more reason to drive slow then, he never waited long enough for me to get his name, license, nothing. Sometimes we have no choice but to walk on the road, our stupid council can't get their act in gear to clear our side walks. Mayor Lispy lips is too busy spending our money sucking up to the cruise industry! I do agree people should wear bright colors and walk against traffic, but in my case I thought I was safe, esp being so close to home!

Obviously, most of you have cars and don't have to walk. For those of us who are too poor to have cars we have to walk everywhere we go, even to the bus stop if we can afford that. If there is no sidewalk or it's covered in ice we have no choice but to walk on the road. Have some compassion!

To Bella from NL, Just a thought from NL and ANYONE else who shares in their thinking....I bet YOU are the ARSES in their nice warm cars who zip pass walkers waiting to cross the street at crosswalks like we are supposed to....pretending not to see us there! It seems that most drivers are the selfish ones thinking THEY own the streets around the city. They don't come to complete stops at stop signs, don't stop at crosswalks and if they do....it is more of slowing down than stopping. The walkers are just trying to do what they can to get to work, school....etc. Look at the student hit last week....the driver RAN AWAY!!! In my opinion I could be lit up like a freaking christmas tree while walking on the sidewalk and all the cocky drivers commenting here are still gonna say it was MY fault instead of THEIRS if I get hit by their vehicle. -

My prayers are with this young man hit on Blackmarsh Road last night. He is not the first and won't be the last unless signs are put up to slow this traffic down. This man was 2 doors away from his home. There was no side walk to walk on.It is scary to cross the street here in front of my door never mind walk down the street to the store. My neighbour's father was killed here as well as my cat a couple of months ago. There has been many accidents on this Minor Arterial with it's 6900 cars and trucks passing by everyday. Coming out from Mount Pearl there is not one stop sign or any sign to slow this traffic down. Make no wonder so many people use it-- it is a straight stretch.If a person is visiting their neighbour a few doors down and this means back on to the traffic do they cross the street here which is worse??No they walk down on the same side and back.Only thing is there was no sidewalk to walk on. The police are giving out constant tickets here, however that is not going to solve the problem...There are alot of kids and people who live in this area and would like to cross the street, get out of their driveway and yes walk to the store safely----- Giving out tickets is great revenue and appreciated however a simple stop sign, yellow sign, slow down sign or just any sign would help in keeping lives safe here...

I live a few doors away from that man that got hit ...and for all you people with your vests and smart a$$ comments , I think you know what to do with them .. Blackmarsh Rd is so busy its unreal .. I lived here all my Life in the same spot .. People are always in a rush to go NOWHERE ...god forbid you have to wait a few more mins to get where your going .. I think there should be a 3 way stop there by clara's store .. Cause people who go there are NUTS ...No patience ... That man was walking where he COULD only walk , So lets blame it on him cause he dont have a VEST ...O come on ....Its the Drivers ...Every year its worse and worse , They dont care they are always in a rush to get somewheres ....

All I can say is WOW.....I live off Blackmarsh Rd and I am a driver and I am fully aware at the lack of snow clearing in this city, especially for pedestrians. I commend anyone who makes the choice to deal with the lack of snow clearing and the horrible public transportation system in St. John's while going to work and school everyday.
Should people without a vehicle lock themselves inside for the duration of the winter!?!! I bet everyone would have something negative to say about that too!!!!
It sounds like some very selfish and heartless motorists around town passing judgement while keeping toasty in their warm vehicles. I believe these would be the same people to lock themselves away at the advise of their trusted lawyers hoping to sober up before turning themselves into the police after a hit & run crying It's not my fault, he wasn't on the sidewalk
My teen brother was struck down on Blackmarsh Rd in a hit & run while delivering newspapers a few years ago due to the lack of snow clearing. I wonder how many of you think he deserved that!?!!

I was driving west on Blackmarsh Road 2-3 weeks ago, doing the speed limit, and a truck zipped up behind me AND PASSED ME ... it was dark, and occurred at the point where the road veers left/Empire Avenue intersection... He was flying and didn't hesitate to whip out around me.
Many people drive way too fast in general, but especially on Blackmarsh Road and other back roads . I would never walk or run that stretch of road for fear of being killed.
I do hope the young man recovers completely ... hard way to learn a valuable lesson. -
