According to Environment Canada, snow and blowing snow - followed by freezing rain - is forecast to begin Thursday night.
Environment Canada has issued an alert to the potential development of dangerous winter weather conditions in the region.
A deepening low pressure system now east of Long Island, New York, is expected to track south of the Maritimes tonight and move over the Grand Banks late Thursday.
Snow and blowing snow is forecast to spread over the Avalon Peninsula ahead of this system by Thursday evening with strengthening northerly winds.
Total snowfall accumulations near five centimetres are expected before changing to freezing rain later in the night, and with temperatures likely to hover close to the freezing mark into early Friday, there is a potential that some locations may experience several hours of freezing precipitation.
There is also a good chance that this wintry mix will spread into some areas west of the Avalon early on Friday.

5 centimeters? As in TWO inches? After last weekend, this barely qualifies as news, let alone a winter storm warning/watch in this province. Now i could see Washington considering this news, but HERE? For this tiny amount? Oh, and a bit of freezing rain. Ya THINK that might be NORMAL for this time of year, HERE? Who WROTE this? A CFA?

I was amused by the winter storm watch article after having watched blizzard conditions all day, and after having eaten two bowls of NF's signature pea soup, which I kick up a notch with Tabasco. Our hardy savory plant in the garden is now sleeping under 28 or so inches (cm ?) of snow. Tomorrow the fun of snow clearing begins. By the way- we love St. Johns. Hi to Nevin & Jane up behind DQ.
