There have been two bids for the Long Harbour Bait Depot.

The Department of Fisheries and Oceans decided to sell the depot - located across the harbour from the Vale Inco processing facility - and tenders closed earlier this month.

One of the bids came from Robert Giovannini (of RJG Construction Ltd.) for $110,000 and the other one from Lester Burke for $102,000.

Public Works and Government Services Canada is working on concluding a sale with the highest bidder.

It's the second bait depot - the other was in Bonavista - to be sold in recent years, a mark of the declining relevance of the Newfoundland Bait Service, which was actually hammered into the Terms of Union with Canada.

Prior to its sale, the Long Harbour site was also the subject of a number of studies related to environmental issues and the soil has been remediated.

One soil sample had concentrations of arsenic and copper above commercial guidelines, according to the environmental disclosure.

The environmental disclosure also identified asbestos in the siding and shingles as well as potentially PCB containing light ballasts, among other things.

The Long Harbour facility - although built onto over the years - was constructed in 1939, one of 22 depots built by the Commission of Government between 1934-49 as cold storage made such facilities possible. Port au Choix, Port aux Basques, Rose Blanche and Hermitage are the only remaining full-service depots, although there are several small holding units around the province.
