St. John's -

Two writers from this province, Lisa Moore and Michael Crummey, have been announced as nominees for this year's international Commonwealth Writers' Prize.

Moore has been nominated for "February" and Crummey has been nominated for his latest, "Galore."

The Commonwealth Writers' Prize is judged over four separate regional divisions: Southeast Asia and Pacific; South Asia and Europe; Caribbean and Canada and Africa.

In each region, a prize is awarded in each of two categories: "Best Book" and "Best First Book."

All eight of those regional winners are then brought together and one overall "Best Book" and one overall "Best First Book" is selected.

"The Commonwealth Writers' Prize is distinct and unique in that the books that win often have strong insight, spirit and voice about the incredible diversity, history and society of the Commonwealth," stated director of the Commonwealth Foundation, Mark Collins, in a release on the nominees.

The prize is presented by the Commonwealth Foundation, with support from the Macquarie Group Foundation.

The awarding of regional winners will begin April 7 and the two overall winners are scheduled to be announced April 12, as finalists are brought together in Delhi, India.
