A man in his 20s from Doyles on the province's west coast is in critical condition with life-threatening injuries after his vehicle lost control on the Trans-Canada Highway and struck a tractor trailer on slushy, snow-covered roads this morning.
The man is being airlifted to the Health Sciences Centre in St. John's from Western Memorial Hospital in Corner Brook.
At about 8:10 a.m. today, the RCMP in Port aux Basques received the call of a serious motor vehicle accident on the Trans-Canada Highway about 25 kilometres east of Port aux Basques in the MacDougalls' Brook area.
The Doyles' man was the lone occupant of a brown Toyota Corolla that was travelling in the west-bound lane heading to toward Port aux Basques when he lost control. The vehicle crossed over into the east-bound passing lane where it collided with the tractor trailer.
The Doyles' man was taken to the hospital in Port aux Basques with life-threatening injuries. He was later transported to Western Memorial and was to be airlifted to St. John's.
The driver of the tractor trailer was uninjured.
The highway was reduced to one lane while a collision analyst from Traffic Services West Unit conducted scene examination.
The investigation is ongoing.
