The Miawpukek First Nation - Conne River on the province's south coast - will get close to $180,000 in stimulus funds from the federal government for recreational projects and traditional trapping research.
The funds will come through the Recreational Infrastructure Fund (RInC) and the Community Adjustment Fund (CAF) - initiatives under the Government of Canada's Economic Action Plan.
The announcement was made today by National Revenue Minister Keith Ashfield.
"The Government of Canada is pleased to invest close to $147,000 for the construction of a new sports chalet and outdoor multipurpose rink, as well as just over $32,000 to support research into the Miawpukek Band's traditional trapping economy," Ashfield said. "These investments represent our government's commitment to ensuring our communities are vibrant and healthy and to helping preserve First Nation's heritage."
The federal support will assist the community to build a 2,500-square foot sports chalet and a multipurpose recreation facility. The funding made available through the RInC program will help cover costs associated with sub structure work, interior and exterior wall construction, roof, electrical, plumbing, piping, hydro connection and site development for the chalet. Site development, concrete slab and board system construction costs will be covered for the multipurpose facility.
The Miawpukek First Nation will receive $32,284 through the CAF program to support research into the band's traditional trapping economy. The data will be used to develop and enhance tourism products and services and for conservation measures.

Some might consider it a waste, but theft of land and resources is ok then I guess. The native people of Canada have more right to this land then any of us just incase you forgot that. Think about how many decades has this province taken hand outs as well. Do you not think the rest of Canada thought that was wrong too or did you forget all about that fact. Seems that such utter ignorance goes hand in hand these days. We OWE, yes owe the Native people of this land far more then we give.

i think more of the money should go into the tourism aspect, at least that might generate a return, and help neighbouring communities.
the recreation money is a waste, i've seen them burn holes into their baseball field during pow wows (fires in wigwams). that was part of a huge outdoor recreation park (baseball, softball, soccer, and track and field), it was beautiful but never maintained all that well, there's just not enough interest in small towns to support this....the same will happen to this facility, it will get used less and less and in a few years someone from band council will turn it into a bed and bareakfast or something. -

What a compete waste of money! Why not put the money into something useful.. They will only whatever they feel they 'are entitled to.' If they feel that they have a right to net a river, poach 100 moose, they will do it. Give them money and they will build what is intended, only to use it for other reasons in 2 years time. Cut off all federal and provincial funding to the place and let them be treated the way everyone else gets treated in the province. Make them pay taxes on their gas and all other purchases like the rest of us 'non-natives'

Kinda strange how when an area like Paradise or St. John's gets money for recreation it's hailed as a start and not enough. When a first nations community gets the money everyone screams that it's a waste of money. Why is that?

Conne River is one of the best Aboriginal Reserves in all of Canada, they have some of the lowest crime, poverty and substance abuse rates in Canada. They deserve funding from the Federal Government.
