Williams says illegal activity by Quebec Innu will not be tolerated

Premier Danny Williams said today the province will not tolerate illegal activity undertaken by the Quebec Innu in connection with the hunt of the Red Wine Caribou in Labrador.
The premier also noted the provincial government will not be intimidated by threatening statements and rhetoric put into the public domain by the Innu leadership.
"Statements made this week by elected officials within the Quebec Innu, coupled with their recent illegal hunt of the Red Wine Caribou herd, is completely unacceptable to our government and must be exposed as rhetoric and activity with a goal of inciting violence," Williams said.
"It was reported this week that RÉal McKenzie, chief of the Matimekush-Lac-John Quebec Innu community, stated that 'this is a war that begins as of now.' These words which conjure up images of violent behaviour are completely unacceptable to me personally and to our government.
"Furthermore, threats to economic development activity such as the Lower Churchill and mining projects will not be taken lightly by our government."
Williams stated government will take any legal action required to address threats that come to fruition. Furthermore, the provincial government will use any legal resources required to ensure that violent and illegal activities are addressed head on, while ensuring the protection of law enforcement officers and the safety of the public at large.
Williams noted in a news release that Quebec Innu took the unfortunate step of attempting to make a point on land claims that could see the extinction of the Red Wine caribou herd. The Quebec Innu claim to have done so in protest over the legitimate signing of the New Dawn Agreement between the provincial government and Innu of Labrador which in no way binds the Innu of Quebec.

The province is going to do something about this?
That's what they said last year, and the year before, and the year before that...
No more rhetoric eh? Sure Danny - I think your press release puts that stement to rest.

Tough talk by Little Man Dan; now back it up! I'll bet that NOTHING gets done and NO charges will be laid; NO fines, no convictions and quite likely, an apology will be sent by government and more handouts to follow. And, finally Dan came clean on his medical issue; as he stated on 22 Minutes, the treatment was available in Canada, but not offered ; wonder why? Ah, he has NO rapport or relationship with any sector outside this province. Oh Danny, you're a poor actor, but you make a great clown.

Jesus, Mary & Joseph; I'm no fan of Williams or any other politician, but reading the comments on different stories from the same people....good Christ, what did Williams do to you in a previous life??

quote '...the extinction of the Red Wine caribou herd. The Quebec Innu claim to have done so in protest over the legitimate signing of the New Dawn Agreement...'

If this quote is true, then how does this legitimize the extinction of a threatened (possibly endangered now) sub-species of anima???

We know that the federal government will do nothing. We know the provincial government will do nothing. Both levels of government do not want another Oka PQ in Labrador, and that is just what they will get if they try to play games.

    This IS Danny's Waterloo.

You know, Danny has done very little for the people of this province if you get right down to it. He likes to flap his gums, but when you cut through all the fog you can see that nothing really has been done to better our lives. Sure he has assisted his business associates in generating high returns on investments, directed contacts worth millions to special interest groups and friends. But when the rubber hits the road all the people are given are rants and flaying arms and hand gestures. This too will amount to nothing and slowly fade away into the back of our minds. You would think that after so many years of empty promises to the people we would know better. At least some due, just too bad that the majority still follow the pack and not look any further.

I see the mouth still works fine after the operation in Florida but will actions follow the words he continues to spew out. Talk is cheap Danny boy and they dont come much cheaper than you. You will say do and promise almost anything to place your self at the centre of attention, but when it comes time to take some real action you as usual play the blame game its all someone elses fault. The people of CBS now have a chance to send the Dictator a clear message. Will they have the guts to do that? Well that remains to be seen on March 16th. If you like the lies cover ups and corruption then by all means carry on for more of the same. If your sick of the lies coverups and corruption get out on March 16th and vote ABCD. Anyone But Crazy Danny.

Wow Danny. Why the change of heart? You and your government have never missed an opportunity to turn a blind eye to outrageous illegal behaviour by our natives before. The fact is if you were serious about not tolerating the behaviour you would have sent armed units in there to prevent it happening in the first place. They didn't exactly do it covertly.

Mark Critch was at his unfunny best when he muttered 'arsehole' twice during that brief skit with Danny Williams on 22 Minutes. Danny Williams is a good sport who just also happens to be the Premier . That garbage from Critch was not necessary. He was on a recent episode of One Chef, One Critic, with Karl Wells and had a crooked look on his face the whole time, to the point where Karl Wells, at times, actually looked uncomfortable. Critch's crack about two men having a baby, after tasting the meal, was also not funny, just annoying, but that's Critch.

If not, it sets a very poor precendent for the people of Newfoundland and Labrador. Will the Innu be charged and fine? Lets wait and see!

Seems like Danny should just head on up and use his mouth. That should scare them away. Lord knows he has not the fortitude to do anything more then talk the talk. When it comes to walking the walk Danny runs the other way to the USA.

Here is the deal Dan The Man. Provide a date and plan of action to the people of this province today. I am sure you can get you act together long enough to do just that. Other wise we will know beyond a reasonable doubt that you are nothing more then a hot air bag. No date, no plan, no third term. Seems pretty simple eh!

It seems that Mr.Williams can't make some people happy no matter what he says or does. Of course such reaction most often stems from jealousy. Why don't you take a breath and wait to see what happens. Actions cannot always happen at the same time as words.

I hope the ministers are hanging their heads in shame. Mr Williams is trying to recoup from heart surgery and he has to take the reins in this situation. I always thought the ministers were supposed to be the premiers right and people in ther respectful departments. It seems that in order for the province to get ahead in this world he really needs to be a one man show. Shame again on the ministers.

I think the Quebec Innu hunters involved in this illegal activity should forfiet to the crown the houses we gave them that they live in gratis by the white man. It only seems fair considering if a white man hunted protected caribou, he would forfeit his quad, gun, truck et el. I think we should be totally responsible for the Innu until the year 2500. Five hundred just isn't enough pay back for whatever we have done.
