The Rooms Corporation in St. John's announced today a major corporate gift of $2.5 million from Husky Energy - the largest gift ever presented to a cultural institution in Atlantic Canada.
To mark the contribution, The Rooms fourth level museum gallery will be named The Husky Energy Gallery.
"This is truly a remarkable and historical moment for all of us at The Rooms," said Dean Brinton, CEO, The Rooms Corporation.
"On behalf of the board of directors, the management, staff and volunteers of The Rooms and, indeed, the people of Newfoundland and Labrador, we send a very big thank you to Husky Energy."
Upon completion of The Husky Energy Gallery, the 5,600 square-foot museum space will present a semi-permanent exhibition titled the Cultural Tapestry of Newfoundland and Labrador (Cultural Tapestry exhibition).
The exhibition will showcase the province's priceless ethnological and historical artifacts from the 18th and 19th centuries; provide the provincial orientation point for the history and culture of our province as experienced by the Inuit, Innu, Mi'kmaq, Metis, European and other settlers; and, trace 300 plus years of the peoples of the province through a tapestry of artifacts, historical documents, and historic and contemporary art from the province and around the world.
"Husky Energy recognizes the importance of the arts and culture in shaping a community's identity," said John C.S. Lau, Husky Energy President and CEO. "By investing in The Rooms, we believe we are investing in the preservation of the Newfoundland and Labrador culture and creating a legacy for future generations."
Construction work on The Husky Energy Gallery will commence in July 2010 with anticipated opening of the Cultural Tapestry exhibition in 2013.

Tobins rooms are one of the biggest waste of taxpayer and private money to ever happen in NL. Smaller museums and or cultural centers could have been placed thruout NL. The amount of money spent on this place is staggering. Thanks for the view .

I don't actually see many people handing out cash without expecting something in return, big oil companies or otherwise. And when did making restitution for past wrongs become a bad thing? I'm no fan of Husky Oil or any other huge corporation, but I'd rather they got their tax deductions this way than giving the money to the Conservative Party, for example. I'm not really sure what it is people are supposed to 'wake up' to, Nasty Nate.

Need to love how people fall for these corporate donations. Wake up. This is a tax deduction and an attempt at restitution for past and current wrongdoings. Does anyone really think that any of the big oil companies would be handing out cash if they did not receive something in return. Oh to live a life with ones eyes fully closed must be bliss.

Husky is a good corporate citizen and should be applauded for contributing to the arts, heritage and cultural sector. They don't pay lipservice like most of the major oil companies. Congratulations to The Rooms!

Excellent! I wish all funding for The Rooms came from corporate donations; that way my tax dollars wouldn't have to be squandered on warehousing, storing and displaying crap that the rest of us threw out years ago and deemed worthless.
