Eastern Health is advising residents of Bonavista and surrounding areas that all outpatient clinics and routine lab and X-ray appointments have been cancelled for Monday and Tuesday in order to conserve power at the Bonavista Peninsula Health Centre.
Deborah Collins, media relations manager with Eastern Health says the hospital has been operating on generator power since poor weather caused a power outage in the community Friday.
"However, these non-urgent services have been temporarily postponed as a precautionary measure," Collins said.
Clinics at the Community Health Nurse Office in Bonavista have also been cancelled for Monday and Tuesday. Patients will be notified regarding the rescheduling of their clinic, lab and X-ray appointments.
The hospital's emergency department remains open for anyone in need or urgent or emergency care.
Ice and sleet has also affected many other communities in the areas of Whitbourne, Conception Bay North and Cape Shore, the Sunnyside, Clarenville and Bonavista areas and in the central region, Gander, Glenwood, Twillingate and New-Wes-Valley.
Newfoundland Power crews are still dealing with downed utility poles and power lines in many communities. Details on the outages can be found on the company's website, www.newfoundlandpower.com/Outages.

Downed utility poles and not the big towers are always the ones to fall. In serviced towns (meaning you are not on wellwater and septic tanks for some of the boo-boo birds who will undoubtedly chime in) they already excavate the roads to the lay sewer and water pipes underneath the road, maybe NL Power can find a way to work with the town and get their scheduling together to lay underground hydro in the aready prepared ground.
