Police in St. John's are investigating today after three men were sprayed with bear spray in the downtown area early this morning.
Officers say around 3:30 a.m. the three men were walking in the area of New Gower Street when they were sprayed with the pepper spray-like substance.
According to several manufacturers' websites, bear spray is most commonly made from oils in hot peppers and causes a reaction similar to pepper spray.
The three men were taken to hospital where they were treated and released.
The crime isn't that unusual.
A St. John's man was found guilty last September of assaulting a man with bear spray in August 2008.
In November another man who sprayed a police officer with bear spray on July 22 was convicted of that crime.
In July a couple were sitting a car on Pennywell Road when someone approached the car and sprayed them with bear spray.
The man was later arrested and reportedly refused to co-operate with police in relation to the incident.
