Thirteen-year-old Anna Henley won the Telegram Canspell Spelling Bee Saturday afternoon.
Correctly spelling the word "debutante," Anna separated herself from a field of 48 students from across the province.
She was presented with a $5,000 Canspell education award, and she will now progress to the national championship later this year.
Members of the audience at the Reid Theatre at MUN got a serious lesson on some of the more obscure parts of the English language.
"A lot of you adults are going to find out you're not as smart as you think you are," Telegram publisher Charlie Stacey said before the competition began. "We believe this is an excellent outlet for the students, exercising their minds."
Anna is in Grade 8 at St. Bonaventure's College in St. John's.
