The annual Canwest Canspell spelling bee is underway in St. John's.
Five rounds in and there are still 20 spellers in the running, down from the 48 who started this afternoon.
The first word for the contestants was rabbit and the words get progressively harder as the bee goes on.
The winner of each Regional Bee will advance to compete at the Canwest Canspell National Spelling Bee Finals in Ottawa, March 24-29. Regional bees have been ongoing in 21 cities and the top speller of each bee receives a trophy, $5,000 to help them in their future studies and a trip to Ottawa to compete at the Canwest Canspell National Spelling Bee Finals.
