It may be Sunday before power is restored to several areas of the province.
A winter storm left power lines covered with ice in many areas, but some areas were also reporting downed lines.
The Canadian Red Cross is sending out mobile teams to help those most affected.
Newfoundland Power crews are working to get the power back on from Whitbourne to Conception Bay North, the Cape Shore and vicinity, as well as Sunnyside, Clarenville, the Bonavista Peninsula and Gander, Glenwood, Twillingate and the New-Wes-Valley area.
It's hoped power can be restored between 5:30 and 6 p.m. Saturday in most areas, but some areas aren't expected to have power again until Sunday evening.
Areas that will have to wait until Sunday evening are; Shamblers Cove, Greenspond, the Bonavista Peninsula, Trinity East, Trouty, Champneys West, Trinity, Catalina, East Point, Port Union, Stock Cove, Sweet Bay, Duntara, Hodderville, Daniel's Cove, Caplin Cove, Bison Cove, and Grates Cove.
The Red Cross is sending out emergency teams from the St. John's, Clarenville and Bonavista areas are equipped to assist municipal officials with temporary comfort centres. It is sending cots, blankets and other supplies to Bonavista in case some people require overnight sheltering. The community hospital and a school gymnasium in Bonavista have been opened for people with medical conditions, particularly those requiring electricity to run oxygen pumps.
The Red Cross is also urging people to be extra cautious about fire risks.
