The Deputy Grand Chief of the Innu Nation in Sheshatshiu announced to the community today that he's resigning the post.
Peter Penashue cited personal reasons for his resignation.
The date of his departure from the band council hasn't been announced.
Penashue was elected in 2007 and his term was expected to end in September.
Penashue served as president of Labrador Innu Nation for 12 years and was the driving force behind the negotiation of the impacts-benefit agreement between the Innu Nation and the Voisey's Bay Nickel Company.

This is a sad day for the Innu Nation... Peter you are a respected leader who has moved mountains to raise awareness of issues that have impacted the Innu people of Labrador... you will certainly be missed, and I look forward to the day that you once again are in a leadership role to further advocate and lobby for a healthy and prosperous future for your people and nation... I believe that your resignation will set back the tremendous advances that the Innu have made under your guidance and leadership... I wish you well.
