The Canadian Council on Learning is telling MPs and senators today that lifelong learning is the key to Canada's future economic prosperity.
The council's president and CEO, Paul Cappon, says learning strategies must be more effective, better organized and constantly monitored or the 21st century will be "painful" for Canadians.
Cappon says better-organized competitors will "eat our lunch."
The Conservative government has cut the learning council's funding effective Wednesday, and today's report is something of a wrap-up of its work over the past six years and a look into the future.
The council says the stakes could not be higher for the country.
Cappon says learning in Canada has much going for it but just as much to be troubled with and, warning that past performance is no guarantee of future returns, he says Canada needs a coherent approach to lifelong learning.
He says Canadians must look to the country's future ability to compete internationally and ask, "without flinching," if they are setting conditions for success or failure.
"It is not too late to get things right, but the clock is ticking and our international competitors are already on the move," warns a council release.
