The provincial government's stated focus on children and youth extended to the province's post-secondary institutions Monday, with a raft of goodies going to Memorial University and the College of the North Atlantic.
Even with a $194-million deficit, Finance Minister Tom Marshall managed to find millions to start construction on student residences for MUN in St. John's and Corner Brook.
"These were existing announcements in the past, but we're happy to see the money was put in place to make sure that they become a reality," said Daniel Smith, Newfoundland and Labrador chairman of the Canadian Federation of Students.
Smith said he was also happy to see the province's tuition freeze at MUN and CNA continue, although he said as the province's economy recovers, students will look to the government for lowered tuition.
"The next logical step, of course, is a reduction," he said. "That's something the students of this province and their families really need to see happen."
Acting MUN president Christopher Loomis was also upbeat about the budget. The St. John's campus will get a 500-unit residence tower, and Sir Wilfred Grenfell College in Corner Brook will get a 200-unit facility.
Loomis has said previously the university's growth has levelled off until it can build new classrooms and lab spaces; on Monday, he seemed happy with what the university is getting.
"The plateau is happening in research growth because we really do need some new and dedicated facilities, but you know, you can't do everything in one year," he said.
On top of the residences, MUN is also getting cash to make its laboratories safer, something Education Minister Darin King underscored while speaking to the media.
"If we're going to have science labs over at Memorial University, it's critical that we have them up to standard and make sure they're safe for students before we even think about moving to expand the capacity in other areas," King said.
The budget also contained cash for CNA to build ventilation in its lab facilities, and more than $11 million to replace the college's Labrador West campus.

Sooo, what I'm taking from this article is that CNA has no ventillation systems in place.
If I were a parent, I'd be interested to know if CNA is conducting experiments in their labs which require said ventillation systems under WHSCC regulations. -
