Northern sea ice is nearly back to average levels globally for the first time in at least a decade after years of spectacular declines.
The surprise growth at a time of year when ice is normally melting has triggered a blizzard of I-told-you-sos among online climate change skeptics.
But the man whose data is behind the furor says a few weeks of cold weather in one part of the Arctic - not an end to global warming - has skewed the numbers.
Mark Serreze of the U.S-based National Snow and Ice Data Center says ice in most northern waters, including Canada's eastern regions, is still well below average.
He says skeptics should be careful to distinguish between weather - which is local and short-term - and climate, which covers broad stretches of time and space.

I suggest that people read Michael Crichton's book 'State of Fear'.
A very good book that has reams of references at the end that would put any of these global warming cult followers to shame.

I'm sure Mr. Mark Serreze of the U.S-based National Snow and Ice Data Center has a computer model which showed this very anomaly.
Fact is...the models these scientists use did NOT predict rising sea ice, when it should be melting.
Tell us again .. WHY we should spend trillions of dollars, turning the worlds economy upsidedown based on computer models scientists claim to be gospel!
They know what the weather will be like a hundred years from now, but can't tell me what the weather will be like a week from next thursday.!!!

What a bunch. Nice scare fient. The only thing they can predict now is how much money they can rack up from it. Its a fine line between predicting and monitoring nature, which these guys can barely accomplish the latter. This is a good toss up between Chicken Little, the sky is falling and The Boy That Cried wolf. I've bought tonic from traveling salesmen with better results than those quacks. Cut their funding right away. Oh YES they should!

I honestly don't know what to believe. But I don't believe we release enough carbon to change the climate--warming is caused by solar cycles and as the planet warms up, the oceans release more CO2. Also this idea of buying and trading carbon credits to save the earth is about as effective as buying indulgences to get into heaven. I think focusing on CO2 is just to distract us from the REAL environmental disaster, such as lead, mercury, chemicals, and pharmaceuticals in the water system.

History is riddled with examples of 'climate change' long before the burning of fossil fuels. The example here in Newfoundland would be the Vikings. When they first arrived here the weather was likely much better than right now. But the weather/climate changed very quickly (some suggest in 10 years) and it got much colder. So cold, that getting back to Newfoundland via Greenland became impossible. In time even their Greenland settlements were abandoned. The arrival of Cabot is almost exactly the same time as when our climate moderated; it was not coincidence.
There has been climate change in the past, it is happening right now and it will continue long after we are gone.
The question is what do we do to take advantage of these changes. Climate change is not ALL bad news! An upward change of just a few degrees will lengthen northern growing seasons like here in Newfoundland. Canada and Russia will benefit having vast tracts of land dominated by very cold winters.
I do think it is being responsible to make efforts to take care of the planet we live on. There are no viable alternatives. Balance should be our reaction but high profile people like Suzuki take things out of focus. -
