A St. John's cab driver scuttled an armed robbery in the metro area early this morning.
Police were called to a Blackmarsh Road gas station around 5 a.m. after a young man carrying a knife entered the store and demanded money.
A cab driver witnessed the robbery and drove up to the store. As the alleged thief was leaving the cabbie pinned him with the door restraining him until police arrived.
Police had to use pepper spray and batons to restrain the man they say robbed the store.
He was then taken to hospital to be examined before being brought to the lock up for court this morning.
The clerk and cabbie were not injured.
According to the Jiffy Cabs dispatcher, the driver went home from work about 6:30 this morning and will be unreachable until this evening.
More on this incident will be posted at www.thetelegram.com as it becomes available.
