Former mayor of St. John's John Murphy is to be honoured with the "Freedom of the City" award.
At the Delta hotel today, at a regular meeting of the Rotary Club of St. John's, Murphy said he had been informed of the honour by city representative Ron Penney.
"I'm thrilled and delighted, if somewhat puzzled," said Murphy, who explained the award is "very seldom bestowed."
The last recipients of the "Freedom of the City" award were members of the 56 Engineer Squadron, who were honoured in October of 2009.
Other past honourees include Paul O'Neill, Andrew Crosbie and the Royal Canadian Regiment.
Murphy was mayor of St. John's from Nov. 3, 1981 to Nov. 13, 1990, and from Nov. 9, 1993 to Sept. 30, 1997.
Murphy said the award is to be presented sometime in June.
