A return to wintry weather conditions is causing slippery road conditions in the St. John's area and the St. John's Regional Fire Department is urging drivers to exercise caution.
Supt. Randy Hammond said within an hour tonight between about 8 and 9 p.m., firefighters responded to four or five accidents and were aware of a couple of other traffic accidents on highways just outside their jurisdiction.
A vehicle overturned on Pitts Memorial Drive near the Kilbride access, and within minutes another accident occurred on Columbus Drive near the Topsail Road intersection.
Another vehicle lost control and ran into a home on Warbury Street in the centre of St. John's.
Hammond said most of the accidents have been of a fairly minor nature and, while occupants in some of the vehicles have been transported to hospital for observation, he's not aware of any life-threatening injuries.
"There's a lot of moisture on the pavement that has frozen and now the snow is building on top of it. It's as slippery out now as it has been just about any time this year," Hammond said.
Temperatures tonight have dipped below zero Celsius.
Tommorow's forecast is milder with a high is 7 degrees with rain.
