Premier Danny Williams announced this morning that Robert Johnston has been appointed Chief of the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary.
Johnston is currently deputy chief and will take over as police chief May 1.
Johnston will replace Chief Joe Browne who will retire from the RNC at the end of this month.
"Robert Johnston has had an impressive career with the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary having served the people of our province for 30 years," Williams said. "Mr. Johnston has played a significant role in the recent revival of the force and I am confident his extensive experience will ensure the RNC continues on its current path which has made it a leader in policing in North America."
Johnston is a 30-year veteran of the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary and has worked in the areas of criminal investigations, crisis negotiations, VIP security and tactical response and served most recently as Deputy Chief of Police responsible for the Criminal Operations Division.
Johnston has completed numerous courses in the areas of criminal investigation at the Canadian Police College in Ottawa. He is also a graduate from the Executive Development Course at the Centre for Management Development at Memorial University of Newfoundland and is a member of both the executive board for the John Howard Society and the board of directors for the Autism Society of Newfoundland and Labrador.

I believe the recent revival they are referring to is when they decided that drunk drivers are free to be free as long as they are MHA's or members of the force and Cocaine, Exstacy and pills are all fine and dandy getting cheaper and more plentiful as long as no one smokes a joint.
Boys, put your money in the right stocks because it looks like another drought is on the way for us evergreens. -

Marcus, I don't know what Chief Johnston's credentials are, but a few initials behind your name does not always make you the best person for the job. Let me guess, you've got some of those fancy initials behind yours. Congratulations to Mr. Johnston! He will make a fine Chief. He is well respected, inside and outside of the force and his track/work record speaks for itself, degree or not.

The older cops never had degrees but the younger ones do, and the younger ones are definitely better then the older. They don't seem to employ the same bullying tactics. Experience for this position should if possible be accompanied by a college degree. And anyone handpicked by the premier seems to be troublesome to the populace in the long run! I wish you the best of luck,Mr. Johnstone!

Let's see how fair this new police chief will be. Will he charge those Quebec Innu for the illegal, needless, senseless slaughter of endangered animals in a closed zone in Labrador ? Or will he treat any white man the same way and not charge him/her for any similar act ? Will there be a fair playing field and equal justice for all ? Or will there be a different set of rules of justice for different peoples ?

A uni degree is good to have but i don't feel required in this position. i have a uni degree and professional designation, but neither makes me more qualified to weild great amounts of power than a man with solid experience and sound judgement....in fact i would say real life experience is the most critical qualification for this role and it seems like he has that.
And Marcus does any degree work for you? do you think merely going to uni is enlightening or is there a specific degree he should have. -

What 'revival' are they talking about? Also, no University degree? I don't know why every other industry requires these, but with careers that involve wielding huge amounts of power a degree is only a secondary thought.

I am sure he is a nice man. Just imagine no education to speak of? No undergraduate degree , No masters degree and be given the reins of a 500 person military firmthat is less than stellar on issues in the ranks.
Only in NL. -
