The newest graduate from Memorial University is a member of the British royal family.
Princess Anne, Princess Royal, was conferred an honorary degree of doctor of laws during a ceremony at MUN this afternoon.
In her remarks, Princess Anne said she felt priviliged to accept the degree, and said it represents one more tangible connection between her and the royal newfoundland regiment.
Princess Anne is the colonel-in-chief of the regiment, and is visiting St. John's this weekend to take part in the regiment's 215th anniversary celebrations and to present new regimental colours to the unit on Saturday.
Princess Anne is the second Princess Royal and colonel-in-chief of the regiment to receive an honorary degree from Memorial University.
Her great-aunt Mary was also recognized during a visit to Newfoundland in 1964.
"Thank you for honouring me, for welcoming into the Memorial University community, and most of all, thank you for everything you do for the people of Newfoundland and Labrador," Princess Anne told an audience of several hundred.
Her visit continues this evening when she hands out Duke of Edinburgh gold awards to some 150 recipients during a ceremony at the Delta St. John's hotel.
